President Donald Trump just gave an opening to the gun-grabbers.
Rather than unequivocally defending the Second Amendment following the largest mass shooting in American history, Trump said his administration will look at the nation’s laws “as time goes by.”
Whatever the hell that means. I’m just not sure.
“Look, we have a tragedy, and what happened in Las Vegas is, in many ways, a miracle,” Trump said, the Washington Free Beacon reported. “The police department has done such an incredible job, and we’ll be talking about gun laws as time goes by.”
Donald Trump then continued to praise the Las Vegas Police Department for their swift actions to respond to the massacre. Regarding the shooter in Las Vegas, Stephen Paddock, Trump said he was a “sick man.”
“He was a sick man, a demented man, a lot of problems, I guess,” Trump said. “And we’re looking into him very, very seriously. But we’re dealing with a very, very sick individual.”
In his 2000 book, The America we Deserve, Trump wrote “I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.”
In 2012, Trump reacted glowingly to then-President Barack Obama’s call for more gun control after the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.
President Obama spoke for me and every American in his remarks in #Newtown Connecticut.

In his 2000 book, he wrote briefly about guns, but said: “Democrats want to confiscate all guns, which is a dumb idea because only the law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns and the bad guys would be the only ones left armed. The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions.”
So which Donald Trump are we going to get? The one who addressed the NRA’s forum in April 2015 and declared: “I love the NRA. I love the Second Amendment.” And “I promise you one thing, if I run for president and if I win, the Second Amendment will be totally protected, that I can tell you.”
Will we get that Donald Trump, or the one who praised Obama’s gun control push and said that he supported the assault weapons ban and “longer waiting periods” on gun ownership?
The answer will be important. Trump supporters have stood by this President, through thick and think, but the Second Amendment might be a line he could not cross. It would possibly be a death blow to his chances of re-election.
Trump has also waffled on whether not people who are placed on a “terror watch list” should be able to purchase guns. Remember: These are people who have not been charged with any crime who would have their Second Amendment rights taken away merely because they’re under the suspicion of the federal government. There is a serious due process concern over
I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns.

“I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns,” he tweeted.
He later seemed to indicate he was siding with the NRA, but has made few further comments on the issue.
