Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Threatens Team Over Anthem

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he won’t tolerate disrespect of America’s greatest symbols before, during or after any NFL game.

“If there is anything disrespecting the flag, then we will not play. Period,” Jones said Sunday, according to the Dallas Morning News. “We’re going to respect the flag and I’m going to create the perception of it.”

He said unequivocally that his players were going to stand for the flag.

“We cannot in anyway give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag. We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind, that the [NFL] and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag,” he said.

“But let me be real, real clear the thing that the National Football League needs to do and the Dallas Cowboys are going to do is stand for the flag. We’re going to do that. It’s the rules that are on the book in my opinion.”

Last month during a game with the Arizona Cardinals, the entire Cowboys team took a knee before the anthem, but stood for the playing itself of The Star-Spangled Banner.

The protests gained national attention after President Trump said that any player who disrespects the National Anthem or the American Flag should be “fired,” calling them a “son of a bitch.”

Attending Sunday’s game between the Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers, Vice President Mike Pence left the game after some players took a knee during the national anthem, saying he was “disgusted.”

“I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem,” he wrote.

Last month, Trump also tweeted his support for Jones and the Cowboys.

“Spoke to Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys yesterday. Jerry is a winner who knows how to get things done. Players will stand for Country!” he wrote.

Over just one month of player, coach, and owner protests of the flag and kneeling for the National Anthem, the NFL has gone from America’s favorite sport to the least liked of top professional and college sports, according to a new poll.

From the end of August to the end of September, the favorable ratings for the NFL have dropped from 57 percent to 44 percent, and it has the highest unfavorable rating – 40 percent – of any big sport, according to the Winston Group survey provided to The Washington Examiner.

Worse for football, which was already seeing lower TV ratings and empty stadium seats, the month of protests and complaints about them from President Trump drove core fans, men 34-54, away, showing just how out of touch the NFL at large are with their base.

The Winston Poll found that the attitude of those fans went from an August rating of 73 percent favorable and 19 percent unfavorable to 42 percent favorable and 47 percent unfavorable, a remarkable turn against the sport.
