Sports Center Host Calls for Boycott on Dallas Cowboys Sponsors

An ESPN host has called for a boycott on Dallas Cowboys’ sponsors.

Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager, said Sunday that his team will respect the flag. He indicated that any Cowboys players who disrespect the flag during the National Anthem will be benched.

“If there is anything that is disrespectful to the flag then we will not play,” Jones said. “You understand? If we are disrespecting the flag, then we won’t play. Period. Period. We’re going to respect the flag.”

Jemele Hill, co-host of ESPN’s Sports Center, was outraged. She took to Twitter to unload on JJ’s decision.

Hill, apparently unaware that there are many (better) means of voicing opinions than sitting or kneeling out the National Anthem. She also seems to think that players who stand for the National Anthem are letting their communities down.

Hill urged fans to “pick up this fight.” She said the responsibility to object to JJ’s remarks about respect for the flag fall onto “paying customers.”

What she’s trying to get at is a boycott. She wants fans to boycott Cowboys sponsors. She takes her time getting to the point, perhaps because she knows her position at ESPN might be in trouble if she publicly tells people to boycott the NFL.

Still not quite getting to her point, Hill insults JJ’s integrity, suggesting that his statement about respect for the flag was just about “keeping the fanbase happy.”

Finally, she says the magic words.

“If you feel strongly about JJ’s statement,” Hill Tweets, “boycott his advertisers.”

ESPN obviously needs the NFL to succeed. Any attack on the NFL’s business is an attack on ESPN’s business. We’ll have to wait and see how ESPN responds to Hill’s call for a boycott.

Hill’s remarks are not particularly surprising. President Trump has made numerous firm statements that NFL players who sit or kneel during the National Anthem are disrespectful, and the NFL should consider firing them.

Hill has famously called Trump a “white supremacist.” Under the Obama Administration, she was invited to the White House twice.
