Nothing will get a leftist more enraged than being proven wrong by one of their own.
But that’s what the liberal New York Times has done in a piece that completely destroys the myth of “assault weapons.”
The argument from the left is that we must have the “Assault Weapons Ban” reincarnated. Every year, some liberal lawmaker reintroduces another assault weapons bill, hoping to make it further than committee…but it rarely does, instead usually dying a quick death.
The truth is, of course, that so-called “assault weapons” are an invention of the left. The law – which effectively banned the sale of big scary rifles that aren’t responsible for most gun deaths – was in place from 1994 to 2004, and did literally nothing to reduce gun crime.
Now, even The New York Times is forced to admit that it’s not semiautomatic rifles that are responsible for America’s gun violence. In their article, they point out that of the tens of thousands of gun murders, only 322 were done with any kind of rifle in 2012.
The continuing focus on assault weapons stems from the media’s obsessive focus on mass shootings, which disproportionately involve weapons like the AR-15, a civilian version of the military M16 rifle. This, in turn, obscures some grim truths about who is really dying from gunshots.
Annually, 5,000 to 6,000 black men are murdered with guns. Black men amount to only 6 percent of the population. Yet of the 30 Americans on average shot to death each day, half are black males.
It was much the same in the early 1990s when Democrats created and then banned a category of guns they called “assault weapons.” America was then suffering from a spike in gun crime and it seemed like a problem threatening everyone. Gun murders each year had been climbing: 11,000, then 13,000, then 17,000.
So Democrats continue to push for a ban of what they think are the most dangerous gun in America: the “assault weapon.” These are guns with military-style features like a bayonet or a folding stock. But they account for less than 2 percent of all the gun crimes committed.
So which gun is used most often? The handgun. And even The New York Times is forced to admit there’s simply no way the American people are going to put up with a handgun ban.
Handguns were used in more than 80 percent of gun murders each year, but gun control advocates had failed to interest enough of the public in a handgun ban. Handguns were the weapons most likely to kill you, but they were associated by the public with self-defense. (In 2008, the Supreme Court said there was a constitutional right to keep a loaded handgun at home for self-defense.)
The true cause of gun violence isn’t the gun. It’s poverty, lack of education, unemployment, and a welfare state that encourages people to avoid work to stay on the government dole.
This will give the left fits. They know they can’t ban handguns, so they’re turning to the uneducated masses who think because it’s big and black and has a bayonet that it’s scary and dangerous and should be banned.
That’s no way to stop crime. It is, however, a good way to lie to people.
