Sometimes, liberals really do make it too easy to discredit them.
The Washington Times reports that nine-year-old Dylan Harbin of California, who gained national attention last month for writing a letter to the White House calling Donald Trump his favorite president, ran into trouble with his wish of a Trump-themed cake for his birthday party.
It seems that no bakeries in the area were willing to make one, so Dylan’s mom had to make it herself.
If the details of this story seem strikingly familiar and more than a little ironic, there’s a reason for that:
Michael P. Farris is president, CEO and general counsel of the Alliance Defending Freedom, the Christian legal group defending Jack Phillips, a Colorado baker who was sued by a gay couple for declining to make their same-sex wedding cake.
Mr. Farris wondered why bakers are allowed to decline to make birthday cakes supporting Mr. Trump, but not wedding cakes supporting same-sex marriage.
“Similarly here, cake shops declined Pickle’s order for conscience reasons,” Mr. Farris wrote in a blog post on Thursday. “Yet, no one on the Left is calling for legal action against the cake shops. And neither should anyone on the Right.”
“The fact is that these cake shops have freedom of speech,” he continued. “They have the right to decline to use their artistic talents to celebrate events or promote messages that violate their beliefs, even if it offends a nice little kid.”
Apparently in the world of liberal un-logic, disappointing an unusually-interested-in-politics-for-his-age preteen kid is just fine, but disappointing a pair of adults is a hate crime.
Logically, there’s not much difference between refusing to provide a politically-charged product and refusing to provide a religiously-charged one. The individual’s discretion over their own political views and religious expression are both sacrosanct under our Constitution, and if you really want to split hairs the only differences are in favor of the religious objections the Left is currently warring against (the First Amendment singling out free exercise of religion).
Yet even as the Left has wholly embraced the practice of legally coercing religious vendors who regard participating in same-sex unions as sinful, the number of mainstream Republican politicians, conservative activists, or right-wing pundits who would ever dream of using the force of law to make someone provide a Trump cake for Dylan stands at precisely zero.
That’s because unlike leftists, we actually believe in the principles we espouse. We didn’t make them up to get a predetermined outcome, and we don’t throw them out just to “win” or punish someone or make a point. Liberals might want to ponder just why that is and what it means about the empty, craven nature of their own worldview.
