Here’s another reason why gun control is dumber than dirt:
Good Guys With Guns Stop Another Mass Murder by Robert Gehl:
Once again, an armed and engaged citizen thwarted a criminal act. This time, it was a whopper.
Two armed citizens stopped a mass murder in progress in Rockledge, Florida.
It happened Nov. 25, when a gunfight broke out in the parking lot of Schlenker Automotive.
The suspect opened fire on a 25-year-old employee, instantly paralyzing him. He then shot and killed Roger Lee Smith, 50, who worked at the shop for many years. Then the two employees – who had CCW permits – intervened.
The suspect was armed with a .45-caliber handgun.
“The manager, who was a concealed weapons permit holder, came out and engaged in gunfire in the parking lot,” Rockledge Police Chief Joseph La Sata said, according to Florida Today. “The manager fled back inside the building, being chased by the gunman. Another Schlenker employee, who also had concealed weapons permit, engaged in gunfire with the suspect.”
The suspect was Robert Lorenzo Bailey, Jr. of Cocoa. He was shot twice and s currently in critical condition.
“Mr. Baily had multiple magazines on his person.” Chief La Sata said. “He was intent on doing harm. The employees stepped up and prevented customers, employees, and other vendors who were in the business at the time from sustaining further injuries. They did a good job.”
As Truth About Guns points out, this is the second time in three weeks an armed citizen has intervened and stopped a potential mass murder.
The first was Stephen Willeford, an NRA instructor who grabbed his AR-15 and engaged the mass murderer at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas on November 5, 2017.
Authorities haven’t released the names of the two heroic citizens who stopped Bailey.
Guns save lives. Yes, they take them too, but it’s undeniable that guns save far more lives than they take.
Guns are used more than 2.5 million times in self-defense – or about 6,850 times per day. The total number of gun deaths by any means is less than 30,000, or a tiny fraction of the times they’re used to prevent a crime.
As evidence of how more guns reduce crime, look at Florida. In the fifteen years following the passage of Florida’s concealed carry law in 1987, over 800,000 permits to carry firearms were issued to people in the state. FBI reports show that the homicide rate in Florida, which in 1987 was much higher than the national average, fell 52% during that 15-year period — thus putting the Florida rate below the national average.
Even the Clinton Justice Department admitted that guns are used 1.5 million times annually for self-defense. According to their report, there are as many as 1.5 million cases of self-defense every year. The National Institute of Justice published this figure in 1997 as part of “Guns in America” — a study which was authored by noted anti-gun criminologists Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig.
As much as they like to argue otherwise, the evidence is clear that an armed populace is the best crime deterrent.
I hope the police release the names of these two heroes so they can receive the accolades they deserve! Guns save lives!
