Last week, TFPP reported that David Clarke, the firebrand conservative Sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, surprised the country by announcing his resignation from law enforcement. Elaboration on why or what he would be doing next was scarce, but answers were promised in the following week. And now we have a big one.
So, will Sheriff Clarke take a position in the Trump Trump Administration? Has he scored a gig as the latest conservative media host? Might he be gearing up for an all-new political candidacy?
It turns out the answer is none of the above. Fox News Channel reports that Clark has announced he is joining America First Action, a super PAC dedicated to electing Congressional candidates on board with Donald Trump’s agenda, as a senior adviser and spokesman:
“It’s truly an honor to join the America First Action team, most importantly because we share the same values that most hard-working, law-abiding Americans do,” Clarke, who resigned last week from his post as sheriff, said in a statement Tuesday. “It gives me the chance to do what I love most—promote President Trump’s agenda, including his fierce support for the American law enforcement officer, and ensure the will of the American people who got President Trump elected is not derailed by the left or the self-serving Washington establishment” […]
“David Clarke is an American patriot, and we are very proud to welcome him to America First,” Brian O. Walsh, president of the PAC, said Tuesday. “Having spent a lifetime in law enforcement –protecting and serving his community and fighting for justice and the Second Amendment –Sheriff Clarke doesn’t just believe in making America safe again; he’s devoted his life to it.”
Clarke had built a following among conservatives with his social media presence during the 2016 presidential campaign. He spoke at the Republican National Convention last July.
Clarke recently published a memoir, titled, “Cop Under Fire,” which President Trump promoted on Twitter last week.
On the bright side, nobody is better suited to tearing leftist saboteurs and establishment hacks a new one than David Clarke. The man pulls no punches, never backs down, and does it all without getting his own foot lodged in his mouth, which is an all-too-rare skill in politics these days.
That being said, speaking as a Wisconsinite and longtime fan of the sheriff, I personally can’t help but feel this career move is a wasted opportunity. Granted, Clarke needed to do something different, given that his national political reputation was on a collision course with Milwaukee’s innate liberalism.
But the Right has no shortage of professional political activists and lobbyists and campaigners and spokesmen. What we do have a shortage of are people of Clarke’s principle, backbone, and ferocity in actual political office. In a House, Senate, or Governor’s office, Clarke could do far more good for the Trump agenda, not by simply saying what needs to be done but by actually doing it — fighting Democrats, being a thorn in GOP leadership’s side, and generally setting a new template for future conservative candidates to follow.
To end this on a positive note, Clarke’s new position could have a positive impact, if he uses his influence to aim America First Action at Republicans no other PAC has the stones to target, and actively seeks out primary challengers more effective than the likes of Paul Nehlen and Sharron Angle. Whatever happens next, we wish Sheriff Clarke all the best.
