In a surprising move, NewsBusters reports that CBS has decided to remove anchor Scott Pelley from the CBS Evening News, ending a six-year-run that started when Pelley took over for Katie Couric in 2011.
The news originates from a New York Post exclusive that suggests, while Pelley is not getting kicked out of CBS entirely, it is indeed a punishment of sorts:
Insiders tell us that CBS News president David Rhodes “is making [Pelley] move to ‘60 Minutes,’” and that the pair “don’t get on.”
Another TV insider said while Pelley’s ratings have been down, “There’s also been friction between him and [Rhodes].”
Added a source, “[Pelley] was pushed out of the ‘Evening News.’ It’s been coming for a long time. This could have been handled better — [Pelley] is away on a story, and they’re cleaning out his office. It’s not the correct way to treat the face of CBS news.”
A replacement has reportedly not yet been chosen.
NewsBusters notes that Pelley has been an outspoken liberal and critic of President Donald Trump, whom the has described as making “statements divorced from reality.” But if you want real detachment from reality, you have to go back to this interview from the 2016 campaign, during which Pelley gave Hillary Clinton some of the easiest softballs imaginable — simply asking her if she’s “always told the truth,” not even bringing up the scores of examples in which he knows she didn’t — and Hillary still wouldn’t commit to anything more than “I’ve always tried to” and “I don’t believe I” ever lied.
Sorry Scott, but from where we’re sitting, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
