Among the many recent Democrat scandals the mainstream media has given a complete pass, one of the worst has got to be Barack Obama’s former national security adviser Susan Rice “unmasking” senior officials within Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Now comes word as to her latest excuse for her actions.
CNN reports that several sources have told them Rice privately justified her decision before House investigators by claiming she was attempting to get to the bottom of a late 2016 visit to New York by the prince of the United Arab Emirates:
The New York meeting preceded a separate effort by the UAE to facilitate a back-channel communication between Russia and the incoming Trump White House.
The crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, arrived in New York last December in the transition period before Trump was sworn into office for a meeting with several top Trump officials, including Michael Flynn, the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and his top strategist Steve Bannon, sources said.
The Obama administration felt misled by the United Arab Emirates, which had failed to mention that Zayed was coming to the United States even though it’s customary for foreign dignitaries to notify the US government about their travels, according to several sources familiar with the matter. Rice, who served as then-President Obama’s national security adviser in his second term, told the House Intelligence Committee last week that she requested the names of the Americans mentioned in the classified report be revealed internally, a practice officials in both parties say is common.
According to the report, this explanation “appears to have satisfied some influential Republicans on the committee,” such as Rep. Tom Rooney (R-FL), who says he “didn’t hear anything to believe that she did anything illegal.”
Yeah…color us unimpressed.
As TFPP has been covering since the beginning of this scandal, House Intelligence Committee chair Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) makes a far-more likely case that the motives here are anything but legitimate.
From The Hill:
“[T]his Committee has learned that one official, whose position has no apparent intelligence-related function, made hundreds of unmasking requests during the final year of the Obama Administration,” [Nunes] continued.
Nunes claimed several of the requests appeared to be lacking in justification for the information sought. He noted that some requests were followed upon by leaks to the media, implying Obama administration officials were the sources of those leaks.
And from TFPP’s Robert Gehl:
Typically, Americans whose data or conversations are intercepted by the NSA without a warrant are legally required to have their names redacted or masked to protect their identities in intelligence reports.
But beginning in 2011, Obama loosened the rules to make it easier for intelligence officials and his own political aides to request that the names be unmasked so they could better understand raw intelligence being gathered overseas.
Do you buy Susan Rice’s latest explanation? What do you expect to happen next? Will another Democrat get away with egregious and illegal dirty tricks against Republicans? As always, hare your thoughts and predictions in the comments.
