Despite the left’s cries that lifting the unconstitutional handgun ban imposed on Washington D.C. residents would result in more homicides, we now have data which shows that nearly a decade later, that is predictably not the case.
The numbers before and after Heller. The Daily Caller reported:
Eliminating the District of Columbia’s comprehensive handgun ban had almost no effect on homicides committed with or without such firearms in the nation’s capital, according to an analysis by The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Investigative Group.
Nearly 80 percent of all D.C. homicide victims from 2000 through 2007 were killed with a gun, city and federal data compiled by The Washington Post and analyzed by TheDCNF found. That figure dropped to 74 percent after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in District of Columbia v. Heller that Washington’s handgun ban was unconstitutional in 2008.
But, as the above graph illustrates, the post-Heller decrease in both the annual number of gun-related homicides and all homicides extended an overall trend that began in 2002 and continued through 2012.
Crime Prevention Research Center President John Lott speaks out. “I expect murders to fall,” Lott told the DCNF. “How they fall is a different question. The people who generally obeyed the ban were law-abiding citizens and not the criminals.”
Lott pointed out what Second Amendment supporters have long noted — those who want to get their hands on guns will do so, no matter what the law says. As Lott explained, the frequent perpetrators of gun homicides in the city — drug gangs — get their hands on guns whether there’s a ban in place or not.
So, the DC noted, “Knowing D.C residents might have readily accessible self-defense firearms in their homes may also have deterred violent crimes, Lott said.”
Leftists’ 2008 predictions. The anti-Second Amendment crowd decried the move in 2008 to uphold the Constitution, claiming that it would result in a dangerous situation for D.C. residents and the rest of the country.
Then-Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, a Democrat, fear-mongered after the decision: “More handguns in the District of Columbia will only lead to more handgun violence.”
California Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein spread the alarmist propaganda when she said that “the people of this great country will be less safe because of it.”
What this means? Once again, the leftists’ attempts to spread fear in order to dismantle the Constitution and gain control have been outed as just that — farcical fear-mongering propaganda.
