Second-quarter political fundraising numbers are in, and boy do they have a story to tell.
Politico reports that during this period, President Donald Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees have reported a whopping $13.9 million haul, much of which came “from several donors without histories of giving large amounts to federal campaigns”:
The source of the funds raised by Trump’s joint fundraising arms shifted dramatically in recent months. While only $1.51 million of the committees’ revenue came from donations of $200 or more between January and April 2017, about $7.48 million of the money raised this quarter was in the form of larger donations.
The biggest donations given to Trump Victory and Trump Make America Great Again came from donors with limited histories of giving to Trump. The top donors, Lianbo Wang and Sherry Li of Oyster Bay, New York, gave a combined $600,000 to Trump Victory. Li and Wang are spearheading a New York real estate project called China City of America that has for years worked to build housing in the Catskill Mountains that would allow Chinese investors to gain U.S. visas through the controversial EB-5 visa program.
By contrast, how are Democrats faring? Not very well, if the funds raised by one of their most high-profile lawmakers, Rep. Maxine Waters of California, are any indication. The Washington Free Beacon reports that the California Dem has raised an abysmal $22,108.79 from total individual contributions:
Citizens for Waters, Rep. Waters’ campaign committee, reported receiving just $12,600 individual contributions throughout the second quarter, which runs between April 1 and June 30. During the first quarter, which spans from Jan. 1 to March 31, the campaign reported $9,508.79 in individual contributions […]
The campaign has compensated for the low amount of individual contributions by pulling in six figures from political action committees. The campaign reported $2,500 from PACs during the first quarter and $99,500 during the second quarter.
Rep. Waters’ campaign now has $193,714.02 cash on hand and debts totaling $128,748.12. A majority of the debt is owed to Karen Waters, the daughter of Maxine Waters.
That debt refers to another scandal we’ve reported on here at TFPP, featuring Waters paying her daughter several hundred grand more to send out constituent mailers than those mailers brought in.
Of course these two sets of results aren’t perfectly analogous; a President of the United States versus one House member. Still, with media constantly insisting the public is turning on Trump and Waters emerging as one of his most bitter critics, one would expect Trump to be the one losing momentum and Waters the one soaring to new heights.
Apparently even for someone from the leftist paradise of California, the Trump hate is already wearing thing…
