Longtime Democratic Fundraiser Charged With Racially Motivated Gun Crime

A big-shot Democrat fundraiser in St. Louis has been arrested for several gun crimes after allegedly firing a handgun and yelling racial slurs at eyewitnesses.

Veteran fundraiser Matthew Lieberman pointed a gun at someone at a gas station while using racial epithets earlier this week, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. After the altercation at the gas station, he allegedly got back in his car and fired multiple shots at the building.

Surveillance footage shows Lieberman with the gun and bullet casings at the scene of the crime match the make and model of casings found in Lieberman’s car.

Just 15 minutes after the incident, Lieberman was found at a nearby Jack in the Box, yelling racial epithets at maintenance workers. He then – again – fired his gun from his Mercedes sedan, court documents say.

John Remstedt, the owner of Grease Masters, a company that cleans kitchen exhaust hoods, penned a Facebook post saying his workers were attacked and shot at while working overnight at the Hampton Avenue restaurant on Tuesday.

“My crew is fine, just a little shook up,” he wrote. He did not return requests for comment.

The 38-year-old was arrested and faces charges of unlawful use of a weapon and “armed criminal action.” One charge includes a hate-crime enhancement, because officers reported that his “conduct and use of epithets indicate his actions to be motivated by race.”

Bail was set at $250,000.

Lieberman, who is white, is in charge of two leftist fundraising firms: Majority Strategies LLC, and RAL Strategic Investment Group LLC. He’s been a longtime fundraiser for Democrats in Missouri, including former St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay.

Records from the Missouri Ethics Commission also indicate Lieberman has recently worked with Florissant Mayor Tom Schneider.

Lieberman’s name is listed on an invitation for a September fundraiser for St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger. Stenger spokesman Ed Rhode said Lieberman provided administrative help for the man hosting the fundraiser, that he had no role in Stenger’s campaign and had not been paid by the campaign.

That’s not the end of the story either. The same car that Lieberman was driving was also involved in an incident during a political protest on Sept. 16. The Dispatch reports:

The driver maneuvered the Mercedes through a crowd of marchers on Forest Park Parkway on Sept. 16. Protesters reported that the driver was armed. No one was reported to be injured in the incident.

Those protests – following the acquittal of a white police officer in the death of a black suspect – turned violent, with broken windows and rocks, water bottles and garbage can lids thrown.

The crowd included more than 1,000 protesters carrying “Black Lives Matter” signs and shouting “No Justice, No Profits!” and “F**k the Police!”

Here’s how the news report described what appears to be Lieberman’s car at the time:

One brush with violence came on Forest Park Parkway, when a car pulled up to the marchers and stopped just short of them. Some protesters responded by surrounding and banging on the car, until protest organizers got them to let the driver leave.
