Are you on the bandwagon? The “Oprah 2020” hysteria?
After her rousing speech against misogyny and racism during the Golden Globe awards Sunday night, all of social media is abuzz saying that the talk-show star (and billionaire many times over) should be the one to challenge Donald Trump for the presidency in 2020. It’s “#Oprah2020” and it’s got people bonkers.
Can you imagine? Two outspoken celebrity billionaires going at each other? I can’t. But Democrats – who just a short time ago said that Trump was unqualified precisely because he was a “celebrity billionaire” now think that Oprah Winfrey is just their person.
Clinton said the same thing about Donald Trump. Vox ran a piece declaring that Donald Trump is the “only U.S. president ever with no political or military experience.” Let’s let The Intercept’s Madhi Hasan take it from here:
Well, dear liberals and Democrats, guess what? President Winfrey would be the second such president. Is this really what most Americans want or what the United States government needs? Another clueless celebrity in possession of the nuclear codes? Another billionaire mogul who doesn’t like paying taxes in charge of the economy? And how would it be anything other than sheer hypocrisy for Democrats to offer an unqualified, inexperienced presidential candidate to the American electorate in 2020, given all that they said about Trump in 2016?
What are Oprah’s qualifications? Handing out free cars? Crying on television? How about the time she said that “old white people” had to die. Take a look:
Oprah isn’t the champion of the left that people think she is. She serves as a spokeswoman for global corporations and has been declared “one of the world’s best ‘neoliberal capitalist’ thinkers.”
The liberal response to the rise of Trump cannot and should not be “let’s find our own bigger, better version of The Donald.” As columnist Emily Arrowood wrote in May 2016: “That Trump is acutely unqualified would be true even if he were Mr. Congeniality, a champion of the people with the aspirations of Jimmy Stewart in ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.’”
The irony is that Oprah may, in fact, be Ms. Congeniality. But she is still as “acutely unqualified” as Trump. Let’s get a grip, folks.
If the best thing the left can throw up is Oprah Winfrey, get ready for eight years of Donald J. Trump.
For his part, the Trump Administration said they welcomed the challenge of running against Oprah.
“We welcome the challenge, whether it be Oprah Winfrey or anybody else,” White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told.
Gidley said Trump is “absolutely … going to run for president again” and said his record would stack up against any opponent.
“Regardless of who decides to run against this president, they are going to have to face a president who has record-setting achievements in a record-setting time,” he said.
It doesn’t sound like it would be too much of a challenge, does it?
