Seth Connell reports that after an horrific attack, people always scramble for a quick answer to what they believe is the heart of the issue.
For the Left, the answer is normally that more gun laws are needed to “get guns out of dangerous people’s hands.” It’s a good goal, no one should disagree with the idea that certain people should not have access to firearms. However, the Left’s solution is sweeping laws that deprive good people of their right to defend themselves.
The Right believes that more citizens should carry a handgun on their person, and that an armed society is a polite society. I largely agree with that sentiment, and advocate that anyone who had a mind to to carry a handgun for personal protection. However, our approach to the issue of mass casualty attacks like Sutherland Springs, New York City, and Las Vegas need to be more holistic than just a more heavily-armed citizenry, as important as that is.
The issue at hand is evil, plain and simple. There is no way around it without being intellectually dishonest, and denying the fact that dark forces exist in this realm. There are evil people in this world, and they will try to do evil things no matter where they are at.
Evil does not need a firearm to carry out its nefarious plans. It can use a truck, a bomb, a plane, an axe, a machete, or a knife, or any object to carry out its deadly desires. For instance, several years ago, a group of evil people carried out a horrific stabbing attack China that left 29 dead, and 130 injured.
As CNN reported back in 2014:
Twenty-nine people were killed and 130 were injured Saturday night when 10 men armed with long knives stormed the station in the southwest Chinese city of Kunming, the state news agency Xinhua reported.
Members of a separatist group from Xinjiang, in northwest China, are believed to have carried out the assault, authorities said. The report referred to them as “terrorists.”
Police said they killed at least four attackers and shot and wounded a female suspect. Authorities were searching for other suspects.
The killing spree came out of nowhere.
Witnesses said that the group of black-clad men just suddenly attacked people at random.
Yang Haifei stated that “I saw a person come straight at me with a long knife and I ran away with everyone. They just fell on the ground.”
Lu Haiyan stated that “I ran to a restaurant already with a full crowd. The restaurant owner shut the door for quite some time before reopening it. Both my hands and legs are shaking.”
Additionally, as Josh Manning writes at Conservative Tribune, there were other attacks following those as well.
After that attacker was executed, another madman attacked another school, victimizing 16, and the next day 31 were injured in a different attack. The day after that (I’m not making this up), a rage-fueled homeowner barged into a school, hammer and can of gasoline in-hand. Three days, three attacks, 47 casualties, zero guns. Remarkable.
It’s not about firearms, it’s about the evil that is inscribed on the heart of man. Those who are prone to evil need to be stopped when they try to take life, but more importantly a message of life must be spread that will change the hearts of those who were disposed to hurt others.
