House Republicans are voicing strong concerns over Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s (D-NY) unexpected decision to pull a fire alarm on Saturday – the very day Republicans initiated the voting process on a crucial bill designed to prevent a government shutdown.

Bowman, a noted member of the progressive “Squad,” stated that his intention wasn’t mischief. “I was merely attempting to reach my voting session. It surprised me when the usual door was locked. I had no intentions of causing an uproar… I was unaware that my actions would affect the entire building. My only thought was that pulling it would unlock the door,” he articulated to the press.

However, the gravity of the situation isn’t lost on officials. Both the U.S. Capitol Police and the House Administration Committee are delving into the circumstances surrounding the event.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) emphasized the serious nature of Bowman’s actions, pointing out its necessity for a more in-depth investigation.
McCarthy expressed his concern, saying, “There will certainly be a dialogue with the Democratic leadership regarding this. However, such an act cannot be overlooked without consequences. It’s frankly disappointing.”

Echoing McCarthy’s sentiments, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) spoke candidly to Fox News about the incident, describing it as potentially crossing legal boundaries and being distinctly uncharacteristic of a congressional representative.

Lawler remarked, “It’s wholly inappropriate for a Congress member to resort to such tactics to hinder legislative proceedings. It’s not what is expected of a Congressman. Reflecting on resignation might be a fitting course of action if indeed he committed this act.”
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) is taking it a step further. She is preparing a resolution that, if passed, could see Bowman expelled from his congressional role. The proposal is expected to be brought forth officially at the beginning of next week.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is also taking action. “I’m calling on the DOJ to prosecute him using the same law they used to prosecute J6 defendants for interfering with an official proceeding,” she stated on X.

In response to the mounting concerns, Bowman dismissed them as “utterly unfounded” when approached by journalists. On the same note, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) informed Fox News that he would reserve his judgment until he views the incident’s footage.
The U.S. Capitol Police verified to Fox News Digital that they are actively looking into the matter, but have yet to release any specifics.
It’s hard to imagine this was an accident given the signs surrounding fire alarms. Let’s see if this is handled the same way they managed the January 6, 2021 riot.
