New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has used a quote from The Bible to make it appear that she and Sen. Bernie Sanders are more Christian than Republicans.
It started when Guthrie Graves-Fitzsimmons, who calls himself an “Expert on the Religious Left” shared a tweet that said Democrat Socialists are more Christian.
“’Democratic socialism and the Bible share a strikingly similar vision of what constitutes a fair and just society,” he wrote quoting a story in Sojourners.

“’If Christians took the Bible seriously on this point, activist politicians like @AOC would not excite such vigorous opposition,’” it said.

“The Bible and democratic socialism preach that governments should enact policies that address the needs of the poor, provide equal access to opportunity, and legislate policies that curb inequity,” the story reads.
“Both believe that any government that ignores the interests of the poor is an unjust government in need of correction.

“As King put it, ‘The curse of poverty has no justification in our age. It is socially as cruel and blind as the practice of cannibalism …’”
And it was all Rep. Ocasio-Cortez needed, as she could not help herself and shared a Bible quote to continue to justify her position.
“’Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me,’” she said, quoting The Bible.

Both ignore the fact that The Bible did not instruct governments to rob people in order to help those less fortunate but asked us to do so voluntarily.

In fact Sen. Bernie Sanders is a wealthy man who has not given his profits in their entirety to help those who are less fortunate.
And it was this month that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez herself said that her six figure salary that she makes as a member of Congress should be raised.
Giving to the poor and the needy is a wonderful thing and those of us in a position to do it should do as much of it as possible.
Many, myself included, could do more than we do but that does not mean it is the government’s job to take it from us and redistribute it.

It was The New York Times that reported in 2018 that it is Republicans who give more to charity than Democrats do.
“Red counties, which are overwhelmingly Republican, tend to report higher charitable contributions than Democratic-dominated blue counties, according to a new study on giving, although giving in blue counties is often bolstered by a combination of charitable donations and higher taxes,” it said.
Still, it is tough to believe that one’s ideologies, as it relates to politics, makes one more or elss Christian or Jewish or Muslim or anything.
And to hear the lecture from the Party that tells us to keep The Bible out of politics, and wants to hear nothing from The Bible on matters of abortion and homosexuality, is more asinine.
