Nobody likes drug trafficking and dealing in their neighborhood. But what communities really do not appreciate is police officers planting drugs to make arrests.
It’s nothing short of a reprehensible affront to justice, but here we are. A Baltimore, Maryland police officer was caught on his body camera planting drugs in a trash-filled alley. Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the officer for illegally planting evidence, the Baltimore Sun reports.
The officers have body cameras, but they can be turned off. However, the cameras can capture a portion of video before actual recording begins (recording with audio).

Police cameras have a feature that saves the 30 seconds of video before activation, but without audio. When the officer is first in the alley, there is no audio until 30 seconds later
Luckily, this officer was careless enough to begin the activation while he was planting the bag of white capsules.

Right from the outset, the officer, along with his partners, are clearly planting evidence and then covering it up to make the scene look like a legitimate drug bust.
When the audio begins, it even sounds like one of the officers in the background may be laughing after the officer says that he will be searching in that area.
Lo and behold, he just so happens to find a bag of pills in that alley. But drug dealers didn’t put it there, he did!
“We take allegations like this very seriously and that’s why we launched an internal investigation into the accusations,” said Police Department spokesman T.J. Smith. “We are fortunate to have body-worn cameras which provide a perspective of the event.”
A man was arrested for this “drug bust” back in January, but this discovery has prompted the prosecution to release the man from jail; he was previously unable to afford the $50,000 bail and has been held ever since his arrest.

Additionally, there may be more problems than just this despicable twisting of justice. This officer was called upon as a witness just days later, and the allegations were not disclosed to the defendant’s attorney in that case.
In total, this officer is a witness in 53 other active criminal cases. But because of this gross misconduct, the integrity of those trials is severely compromised.
Each of those cases could be declared a mistrial because of this officer’s despicable actions. He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The repercussions of this particular officer’s misconduct will not simply affect the Baltimore area. Because of prolific media, it will be spread far and wide, and will be used by police-bashers to continue their War on Police.

Now let me be clear: I’m all for accountability at all levels of government. If an agent of the State breaks the law, he/she should be prosecuted for it. Police officers are not exempt from this. Those who abuse their power must not be allowed to get away with it, because their misconduct causes blowback for the rest of the officers who are properly doing their job, and for the communities where they work.
