In an unusual occurrence during a Senate GOP leadership press conference on Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) froze mid-sentence, prompting a swift response from his Republican colleagues.

McConnell, 81, holds the record as the longest-serving party leader in the history of the U.S. Senate.

The seasoned senator’s freeze during his regular press briefing raised eyebrows among those present.

Kicking off the press briefing, McConnell had started, “Well, good afternoon, everyone. We’re on a path to finishing the NDAA this week. There’s been good bipartisan cooperation, as well as a string of, uh…” before his speech unexpectedly trailed off.

As the silent pause extended, the concern among the GOP colleagues became visible.

Senators Steve Daines (MT), Joni Ernst (IA), Shelly Moore Capito (WV), Jon Thune (SD), and John Barrasso (WY) were seen on video anxiously watching McConnell.

Taking the initiative, Senator Barrasso attempted to gently coax McConnell, asking, “Hey Mitch, anything else you wanna say, or should we just go back to your office?”

McConnell did not respond verbally but seemed to acknowledge Barrasso’s query with a vague “Hmm?” and a lean forward. Barrasso then asked, “Do you want to say anything else to the press?”

Without uttering a word, McConnell then moved away from the podium, guided by Senators Thune and Barrasso, each with a supportive hand on his arm.

McConnell briefly left the press conference, only to return shortly after, Associated Press reports. “I’m fine,” he assured the gathered media, offering no further explanation.

The 81-year-old leader had previously been absent from Senate proceedings for nearly six weeks earlier this year following a fall in which he suffered a concussion and fractured a rib, his office reported.

At the time of reporting, McConnell’s office had not yet issued a statement regarding Wednesday’s incident.
