Every few days comes a fresh reminder that most elected Democrats don’t actually believe their own rhetoric about which policies work and which don’t, that the positions they take have nothing to do with a sincere commitment to the welfare of the people.
This week’s comes from Kentucky, where Democrat Gov. Andy Beshear is having a fence constructed around the governor’s mansion in response to recent unpleasantness from protesters. Sound familiar?
WDRB has the details:

“Recently, a group of armed demonstrators crossed over barriers to stand on the front porch of the mansion, just a window pane away from where the Governor and First Lady raise their two young children, and chanted for him to come outside,” Beshear spokeswoman Crystal Staley said in an emailed statement. “They then hung the Governor in effigy on Capitol grounds. At that time, the Kentucky State Police executive security requested a fence be built for the safety of the current and future first families.”
The state is soliciting bids from contractors to install a four-foot ornamental fence around the mansion with a powered gate and two manual gates, according to public documents.

The job will be done in the next two or three months, according to the documents.
Yes, in case you’re wondering, this is the same Andy Beshear who has said it’s unnecessary for Kentucky to have a law against sanctuary cities, and Democrats are the party that bitterly opposes the prospect of a wall on America’s southern border.

The tired left-wing cliche that “walls don’t work” has always been one of the lamest talking points in the history of politics, and stories like this demonstrate why: because everyone instinctively knows it isn’t true — including the people saying it.
If walls didn’t work, nobody would have fences around their houses.
Similarly, if guns didn’t deter violence, the people who oppose individuals’ right to own them wouldn’t hire armed security to accompany them wherever they go. (And in the case of border security, it’s worth noting that nobody calls for just building a wall, anyway — obviously it would also have cameras, armed patrols, and other security measures.)
The real reason Democrats oppose a border wall, then, must be something else. And in fact, their true motive is perhaps the worst-kept secret in American politics: they want illegals to continue flowing in from impoverished nations.
People who come from cultures not steeped in liberty, people disproportionately susceptible to the allure of government assistance — people, when both those facts are taken together, ripe to be molded into permanent Democrat voters.

As Ian Smith laid out for National Review in 2015:
The Census Bureau includes aliens (both legal and illegal) in the statistics used to apportion our 435 congressional districts. This has the perverse effect of helping states with bigger immigrant populations to inflate both their representation in Congress and the number of Electoral College votes they are allotted (the latter is a function of the former).
Just through their illegal-alien numbers, the states of New York, New Jersey, California, Florida, and Illinois, which all went for Obama in 2012, received eight additional congressional seats in the last reapportionment, with over half of those gains coming from their sanctuary cities and counties.
It’s clear, then, why Democrats resist enforcing our immigration laws: More bodies mean more power […]

The immigrants we’ve let in since the late Sixties are largely Hispanic, and ever since the 1980 election, when we started tracking their voting figures, Hispanics have reliably voted heavily Democratic.
Considering, then, that California has two of the five main areas immigrants end up settling in (Los Angeles and San Francisco–Oakland), it’s not surprising that the state flipped from red to blue after the U.S. adopted an open-borders policy. (California has just enacted a statewide sanctuary policy, although it is weaker than San Francisco’s.)
Since then, the numbers have steadily moved in one direction — and will explode if the Democrats get a president who will enact mass amnesty.
If and when that happens, Democrats won’t have to worry anymore about how lame their talking points are… their dominance will be secure either way.
