In Washington D.C., which has been struggling to reduce their 6.6 percent unemployment rate, they raised the minimum wage to $10.50 per hour. In July it will go up again to $11.50.
The job growth of 3 percent they experienced in 2014 dropped to zero last year when the minimum wage increased.
In Chicago, they experienced their weakest year of job growth in six years. The minimum wage rose to $10 per hour in July. The following quarter, job growth slowed to only 1.1 percent – half of what it was the year before. The numbers are likely even worse, as the figures represent the entire Chicago metro area and the minimum wage only went into effect in Chicago.

The Bay Area cities of Oakland and San Francisco experienced a 4.7 percent job growth in 2014. Early in 2015, they jointly raised their minimum wage to $12.25 per hour. How did jobs do after that? Much worse. Employment gains in the “leisure and hospitality” sector – where most minimum wage jobs are – were cut in half to 2.5 percent while jobs in other sectors rose at almost twice that rate.
It’ll get worse for the Bay Area – the minimum wage will keep rising up to $13 per hour this summer.
In Los Angeles, their minimum wage rose to record-high levels – $15.37 per hour for many jobs with a county-wide increase to that level by 2020. How did they do? Job growth in that sector dropped by 0.8 percent.
