If early reports are any indication, it’s going to be a pretty lousy week for NBC Sports. The network was already whacked with the lowest-rated Super Bowl in years on Sunday, and now the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics is down as well.
According to early reports, the ratings for PyeongChang Olympics’ first network broadcast was considerably down from the winter games held in Sochi, Russia four years ago.
There are many contributing factors, but one can’t help but believe that the increasing politicization of sports isn’t having a spillover effect into events outside of the NFL.

There was the inevitable sniping at President Donald Trump by U.S. Olympians, and two gay members of the American team made it a point to put jabs at devout Christian Vice President Mike Pence above their representation of their country in the competition.

This isn’t going over well with the folks in middle-America, who don’t want liberal politics jammed down their throats when they are watching sports.

Via Deadline Hollywood, “Olympics Opening Ceremony Snags 27.8M Viewers; Slides From Sochi 2014”:
A tape-delayed opener to the Games in South Korea that brought in 27.8 million viewers on the network AKA a chilly 12% drop from the official start of the last Winter Olympics just over four years ago in Sochi.
With geopolitical tensions, VIP seating plans, 1,200 pre-recorded morphing drones, VR and the newly minted team of Katie Couric and Mike Tirico, the Comcast-owned net tried hard to make the event seem almost as brand new and sparkling as the ice beneath 2010 figure skating Olympic champion Yuna Kim when she lit the cauldron at the end of the live across all time zones extravaganza.
Still, despite thousands of performances, a distinct injection of imagination and that always trivia filled Parade of Nations, and coming off a less than gold initial and unofficial first day, NBC also came up short in the ratings, again
In metered market results and with very little competition from the rest of the Big 4, the more than three and a half hour Opening Ceremony coverage of the South Korea-set Games snared a 16.9/5 rating.

Nowhere near even a bronze medal, that’s down 9% from what the February 7, 2014 Opening Ceremony of the XXII Winter Olympics from Sochi delivered in the early numbers. In fact last night’s coverage of the opener of the 2018 Winter Olympics currently stands as the 11th high rated non-U.S. Olympic opening ever.
An update to the story added the following spin from NBC:
The actual white tiger and K-Pop filled Opening Ceremony of the XXIII Winter Olympics occurred early on Friday morning in PyeongChang and was widely streamed and disseminated by the time NBC put on its primetime show last night.
But it’s really just an exercise in turd polishing, because the media has managed to politicize the games even more since Friday’s opener.

Astonishingly, the self-proclaimed “most trusted name in news” CNN is even acting as propagandists for the despotic regime in North Korea by fawning all over dictator Kim Jong-Un’s sister:

It’s now gotten to where Trump Derangement Syndrome has so ravaged the media that they are doing puff pieces on a fiendish member of a murderous regime.
To its credit, CNN does manage to point out the fact that Kim Yo Jong works in one of the top spots at Pyongyang’s Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers’ Party, and she just earned a big raise by playing the idiots at CNN like a Stradavarius.

Even ABC and NBC have been guilty of promoting North Korea out of hatred for Trump.

With the big media putting themselves firmly on the side of a regime that has threatened to nuke American allies, Hawaii, and the West Coast, it isn’t likely that NBC’s ratings are going to recover anytime soon. They increasingly resemble television programming that may as well be hand-picked by Kim Jong-Un himself.
