Governor Jay Inslee (D-WA) recently signed the contentious Senate Bill 5599, introduced by State Sen. Marko Liias (D-Everett), which permits the state, under certain conditions, to legally remove children from their parents if the parents don’t consent to their child’s gender transition surgeries or abortions.
This law undermines parental rights and according to opponents effectively enables the “state-sanctioned kidnapping of children.”
Under the current Washington state law, youth shelters must notify parents or guardians within 24 to 72 hours when a child seeks refuge.

Senate Bill 5599 removes parents from the health and mental health care decision-making process for their children.
According to Sen. Liias, the bill aims to create a safer environment for transgender and at-risk youth during challenging times in their lives.
He stated that Washington rejects “the politics of transphobia and fear,” seeking to help LGBTQ youth remain safe and supported.

However, this legislation raises concerns about the state’s intrusion on parents’ rights to raise their children, and critics argue that it undermines the family structure.
By allowing the government to intervene in personal decisions regarding gender transitions and abortions, the bill effectively removes parents’ authority in guiding their children through these critical choices.
